The end of each year brings the temptation to predict the next. This coming year in particular, with the approaching conjunctions of untenable political, unsustainable economic and uncontrollable ecological trends, the increasingly outrageous madness of so-called leaders and those who follow on display for everyone else, the overwhelming forces of whirlwinds that we are now collectively reaping, and the portending astronomical calculations of an ancient human-sacrificing culture, make 2012 a uniquely apocalyptic future to ponder, with all the potential victories, freedoms and joys that such a cataclysmic time might offer. Here, then, is my own list of prophesies, predictions, probabilities and presciences.

The stars will sing, as they have since time immemorial, and with the exception of a few God-intoxicated mystics throughout the ages, we will be the first humans to hear them.

Flowers will bloom, as they have for over a hundred million years.

As the tiny creatures that flowers depend on perish, and the foods they provide us diminish, the realization will dawn that pollinators are our most precious relatives.

We will gradually awaken to the reality that water is more important than oil.

We will continue learning, through great and prolonged suffering, that there are some dimensions of Creation that are sacred, and therefore inviolable, and that we have committed grievous errors against nature that will haunt future generations for ages.

We will witness the winds of unrestrained greed spreading the seeds of deception to the farthest reaches of the earth.

What we have suspected for a long time will become increasingly well understood: that those in high places of corporate power, while not literally insane, are instead neurochemically handicapped in a way that renders their minds and behavior more reptilian than human.

Awakening to the spiritual call of freedom and the deep longing for fulfillment of its true destiny, the stirring waves of humanity will rise higher, fueled by hunger, oppression, torture and hopelessness, to cleanse the corrosive corruption of inhumane men who cling to power at all cost.

The animals will continue moving to the timeless rhythms of the earth and its seasons, as long as they are able.

The words of Rumi will become even sweeter.
